Opening Overview

The Northwest Vipers opened their 2026 AFI Division One campaign at Prehen Playing Fields, hosting the recently relegated South Dublin Panthers in the season opener. With anticipation building around the start of the new campaign, the Vipers were eager to begin the year strongly in front of their home supporters.

After losing the coin toss, the Panthers elected to defer, giving the Vipers the first offensive drive of the afternoon. However, a disciplined Panthers defence quickly forced a three-and-out to set the tone for a physical contest between the two sides.

Early turnovers proved costly for the Vipers as the Panthers capitalised on opportunities in the first half to establish a lead. Despite the deficit, the Vipers defence would respond well after halftime and held the visitors scoreless for the remainder of the game.

First Half Summary

The opening quarter saw both teams testing each other defensively. After an early Panthers punt, the Vipers looked to gain momentum before a fumble deep in their own territory was recovered by the visitors.

The Panthers capitalised on the short field, finishing the drive with a rushing touchdown to take a 6–0 lead. The visitors extended their advantage later in the quarter when another turnover allowed them to add a passing touchdown and extra point to make it 13–0.

Despite the setbacks, the Vipers offence continued to battle. Alan Lee Creswell provided energy in the running game with several determined carries, including an 11-yard rush in the first quarter, while quarterback Mike Naulty connected with Lorcan McCartney for a six-yard completion during the second quarter.

Before halftime, the Panthers added another rushing touchdown to extend the lead to 19–0 heading into the break.

Second Half Summary

The Vipers defence delivered a strong response after halftime, tightening their discipline and preventing the Panthers from adding further points.

Linebacker Josh Reed provided a key moment in the third quarter with an interception that briefly shifted momentum in favour of the home side. Reed was heavily involved throughout the contest and led the defensive effort.

The secondary also contributed several important pass breakups, with Cathal O’Kane, Finn Craig, Evan O’Kane, and Darren Quinn disrupting the Panthers passing game.

Late in the fourth quarter, Dylan Coyle added to the defensive effort with a quarterback sack and tackle for loss.

The Vipers offence showed its best momentum on the final drive of the game, when quarterback Mike Naulty connected with Jack Colhoun on a series of receptions, including a long gain that moved the Vipers deep into Panthers territory.

Key Performers

Jack Colhoun was named Offensive MVP following his key receptions on the Vipers’ final drive.

Defensively, Josh Reed earned Defensive MVP honours after recording nine tackles, a tackle for loss, and an interception.

On special teams, Cathal O’Kane was named Special Teams MVP, highlighted by an impressive 30-yard punt return.

MVP awards for the 2026 season are proudly supported by The Branch Bar and Grill, Campbell’s Bar, The Old Dock’s and Georges Bar.

Looking Ahead

The Vipers now turn their attention to their next challenge as they travel to Newforge Sports Complex in Belfast on March 22nd to face the Antrim Stags as they look to bounce back and secure their first win of the 2026 campaign.

Opening Overview

ORiding the high of their earlier comeback, the Northwest Vipers returned to the field to face the Belfast Knights in their second preseason matchup of the day. With both teams eager to keep the energy up, this contest promised to test the Vipers’ endurance and adaptability. The Vipers rose to the occasion, delivering an assertive offensive display and timely defensive stands to leave Victoria Park with a hard-earned 2-0 record for the weekend.

First Half Summary

The Vipers wasted no time establishing their offence, as Rachel hauled in a 25-yard touchdown pass from Cara to open the scoring. The Knights responded with a touchdown of their own, but missed the extra point, keeping the Vipers narrowly ahead. Tia then found the end zone on a pass from Cara, with Amy securing the extra point to extend the lead. The Knights struck back with another touchdown before halftime, again failing to convert the extra point. The Vipers entered the break with a slim advantage, but plenty to play for.

Second Half Summary

After halftime, the Vipers’ offence continued to click. Amy caught a touchdown pass from Cara, and a shovel pass from Cara to Rachel added another extra point. The defence stepped up as well, with Tia snatching a crucial interception to halt a Knights drive. In the closing stages, Rachel found herself wide open in the left side of the end zone, securing another touchdown and extra point from Cara under pressure. The Knights mounted a late rally with a touchdown and extra point, but Rachel’s interception on their final drive sealed the result. With five seconds left, the Vipers took a knee, closing out a successful day with a 27-19 win.

Key Performers

Offensive Impact: Cara orchestrated the attack with poise, connecting with Rachel, Tia, and Amy for multiple scores. Rachel’s versatility as both receiver and extra point threat was a difference-maker.

Defensive Leaders: Tia and Rachel’s interceptions were pivotal in stopping the Knights’ momentum and preserving the lead.

Trenches & Physicality: The Vipers’ squad showed grit and stamina, maintaining intensity across
both games in testing conditions.

Closing & Next Fixture

The Vipers close out their preseason weekend with back-to-back wins, demonstrating both resilience and attacking flair. While the perfect record is a boost, the focus now shifts to refining execution and building on lessons learned as preparations continue for the Claddagh Bowl. Supporters can look forward to more action and are encouraged to stay engaged as the team gears up for the season ahead.

Opening Overview

On a bright but brisk afternoon at Victoria Park, the Northwest Vipers took the field for a highly anticipated preseason clash against the Belfast Trojans. With both teams eager to test their rosters and set the tone for the upcoming season, this fixture carried added significance as an early benchmark for the Vipers’ progress. Despite the friendly status, the match offered a valuable opportunity to showcase the club’s growth, unity, and competitive spirit. In the end, the Vipers delivered a dramatic comeback, securing a memorable 13-12 victory—their first ever win over the Trojans—setting an optimistic tone for the day’s doubleheader.

First Half Summary

The opening stages saw the Trojans assert early control, capitalising on quick offensive drives to take a 12-0 lead by halftime. The Vipers struggled to find rhythm on offence, with the Trojans’ defence stifling initial attempts to move the ball. Despite the deficit, the Vipers’ defence showed flashes of promise, making key tackles and forcing the Trojans to work for every yard. However, two early touchdowns put the Vipers on the back foot, and the team entered halftime facing a significant challenge. The mood at the break was determined rather than discouraged, with coaches and players regrouping to identify adjustments and reignite momentum.

Second Half Summary

The second half marked a turning point, as the Vipers emerged with renewed energy and focus. Defensive captain Rachel sparked the comeback with a pivotal interception and pick-six, narrowing the gap and injecting belief into the squad. Although the extra point attempt fell short, the momentum clearly shifted. Shortly after, Tia delivered another crucial defensive play, intercepting a Trojans pass and halting their advance. With the game finely poised, a strategic quarterback change saw Rachel move under centre and Cara shift to receiver. The adjustment paid dividends when Rachel connected with Cara for a 35-yard touchdown, and Aine’s successful extra point reception gave the Vipers a slender 13-12 lead. The defence held firm in the closing minutes, sealing a hard- fought and historic victory.

Key Performers

Offensive Impact: Rachel’s composure at quarterback and Cara’s decisive touchdown catch were instrumental in the comeback. Anya’s reliable hands secured the winning extra point.

Defensive Leaders: Rachel and Tia’s interceptions changed the game’s trajectory, while the defensive unit as a whole showed grit and discipline throughout.

Trenches & Physicality: The Vipers’ lines battled through challenging conditions, providing the platform for both defensive stands and offensive breakthroughs.

Closing & Next Fixture

With spirits high after a first-ever win over the Trojans, the Vipers regrouped and refocused for their second challenge of the day against the Belfast Knights, eager to build on their momentum and test their depth in back-to-back matches.

Opening Overview

The Northwest Vipers secured their first win of the 2026 campaign with an impressive 21–0 road victory over the County Antrim Stags at Newforge Sports Complex, Belfast.

In their first away game of the season, the Vipers delivered a composed and physical performance on both sides of the ball. After a tough opening week, this result marks a strong response as the team levels their record at 1–1.

A dominant defensive display, combined with a balanced offensive performance, saw the Vipers take control of the game and execute effectively in key moments.

First Half Summary

The game opened with a tough, physical first quarter as both defences held firm and prevented any early scoring. The Vipers moved the ball well offensively but were unable to capitalise, including a missed field goal attempt.

A turnover briefly stalled momentum when the Vipers threw an interception on their second drive. However, excellent hustle from Lorcan McCartney prevented a potential pick-six, tracking back to stop the return.

The Vipers continued to lean on their ground game, with Darren Quinn leading the way at running back and finding consistent yardage behind a strong offensive line performance.

The breakthrough came in the second quarter when quarterback Mike Naulty finished a well-worked drive with a 2-yard rushing touchdown on a QB sneak. In his senior kitted debut, Harry Burgess converted the extra point to give the Vipers a 7–0 lead heading into halftime.

Second Half Summary

The Vipers built on their momentum in the second half with a confident and well-rounded offensive display.

Naulty extended the lead with a composed passing touchdown to Lewis Lecky, who was left open in the back of the endzone for an 8-yard score. Burgess added his second successful extra point to make it 14–0.

The Vipers offence continued to click, combining an effective passing attack with a strong run game. The highlight came when Naulty launched a deep ball to Harry Chambers, who marked his senior debut in style with a 60-yard touchdown reception. Burgess remained perfect on the day, converting again to extend the lead to 21–0.

On the ground, the Vipers were dominant, finishing with 148 total rushing yards, led by Darren Quinn’s 88-yard performance, consistently gaining tough yards and controlling the tempo of the game.

Defensively, the Vipers were outstanding throughout, recording six sacks from Josh Reed, Niall Lyons, Cathal Curran, and Joshua Ferris (2). Darren Quinn also forced a fumble as the defence maintained control and secured a shutout.

Key Performers

The performance was a true team effort, with strong contributions across all units.

On offence, Mike Naulty and the offensive line (Dylan Coyle, Owen Brady, Niall Lyons, Cathal Curran, Michael Gallagher and Leroy Harris) were named Offensive MVPs, reflecting both efficient quarterback play and dominance in the trenches.

Defensively, Josh Reed led the team in tackles and was named Defensive MVP alongside Caolan McLaughlin, who impressed in the secondary.

On special teams, Harry Burgess earned Special Teams MVP honours, finishing a perfect 3/3 on PAT attempts in his senior debut.

MVP awards for the 2026 season are proudly supported by The Branch Bar and Grill, Campbell’s Bar, The Old Dock’s and Georges Bar.

Looking Ahead

This result provides strong momentum for the Vipers as they build into the season following a balanced start at 1–1.

The team will now look to carry this performance forward as they continue their AFI Division One campaign, with confidence growing after a dominant all-round display. Next up is a long trip to Wexford for the Vipers on April 12th where they face the Wexford Eagles at Gorey Town Park.

Season Record

2–1

Opening Overview

The Northwest Vipers delivered a statement performance on the road, defeating the Wexford Eagles 26–18 after a long journey south. Having been beaten twice by the Eagles last season, including in the AFI Plate Final, this was a significant result for the Vipers as they unleashed the venom and made their mark early in the 2026 campaign.

In a game that showcased both explosive offence and dominant defensive play, the Vipers built a commanding first-half lead before holding off a late Eagles comeback to secure the win and move to 2–1 on the season.

First Half Summary

The Vipers made a strong start, taking an early lead when quarterback Mike Naulty connected with Lorcan McCartney for his first senior-kitted touchdown, with Harry Burgess converting the extra point to make it 7–0.

The Eagles responded quickly with a passing touchdown of their own, narrowing the score to 7–6. However, the Vipers offence soon found its rhythm and began to take control of the game.

In his debut performance, Mike Mallon made an immediate impact at running back. Behind a strong showing from the offensive line, Mallon powered his way to two rushing touchdowns, consistently gaining yardage and driving the Vipers forward. Burgess added another extra point to extend the lead.

The scoring continued as Darren Quinn added a rushing touchdown of his own, capping off a dominant offensive stretch. By halftime, the Vipers had built a commanding 26–6 lead.
Defensively, the Vipers were outstanding throughout the first half.

Consistent pressure and multiple sacks limited Eagles quarterback Ross McCooey, while JP McKee added an interception to halt a promising Eagles drive.

Second Half Summary

The second half saw a strong response from the home side, as the Eagles began to find momentum through the air. Two passing touchdowns brought them back into contention and reduced the deficit to 26–18.
As the game tightened, the Vipers offence struggled to regain the same rhythm that had defined their first-half performance, allowing the Eagles to build pressure heading into the final stages.

However, the Vipers defence stepped up when it mattered most. On the Eagles’ final drive, with no timeouts remaining, Darren Quinn produced a crucial game-sealing interception, halting the comeback attempt and allowing the Vipers offence to take the field in victory formation.

Key Performers

The performance reflected a strong all-round team effort, with standout contributions across the board.

On offence, Mike Mallon was named Offensive MVP following an impressive debut, recording two rushing touchdowns and consistently driving the Vipers forward.

Defensively, Jonbrad Duncan earned Defensive MVP honours after a dominant display that included four sacks, with a special mention to Niall Lyons for his impact in the trenches.

On Special Teams, Lewis Lecky was named Special Teams MVP for his kick returns, consistently giving the Vipers offence strong field position.

MVP awards for the 2026 season are proudly supported by The Branch Bar and Grill, Campbell’s Bar, The Old Dock’s and Georges Bar.

Closing & Next Fixture

The Vipers now turn their attention to a quick turnaround as they return home to Prehen Playing Fields to face the West Dublin Rhinos. With momentum building, the team will be aiming to continue their strong run of form and push their record to 3–1.

Season Record

1-1

Opening Overview

After a narrow, late loss to the Red Bows in Game 1, the Northwest Vipers Women’s
Flag team regrouped quickly and returned to the field at UCD determined to reset the
tone of their Claddagh Bowl campaign. The response was exactly what you want from a
developing side: fast, physical, and focused. The defense set the standard early with
relentless pressure and disciplined coverage, while the offense built confidence drive by
drive, finishing chances and controlling the game. The result was a complete 26-0
shutout -an important milestone for the group and a clear sign of what this team can
look like when it plays with composure from start to finish.

First Half Summary

From the opening snap, the Vipers defense made life difficult for the Panthers. Amy Gorham led
the charge with heavy blitz pressure, forcing the quarterback to work under constant
stress. On one early sequence, Gorham broke up a pass, then immediately followed the
play through—finishing with a sack after the quarterback secured the ball. That
intensity set the tone for the rest of the game.

The pressure paid off again moments later when Tia Sadlon made a play for the ball and got a
tipped interception, handing the Vipers offence a short field and an early opportunity to
strike. The Vipers capitalised with a well-designed gadget play, as Cara Phillips kept the ball
and ran it in to open the scoring.

After a few exchanges on both sides of the ball, the Vipers offence found itself set up in
the red zone and took full advantage. Rookie wide receiver Aisling Grieve checked in and
immediately made her presence felt—working through traffic and finding space at the
back line. Phillips delivered the pass, and Grieve secured her first franchise touchdown for
the Vipers, giving the sideline a huge lift and pushing the momentum firmly in Vipers’
favour heading into the second half.

Second Half Summary

The Vipers came out after halftime with the same intent—no drop-off, no letting the
Panthers back into the contest. The offence continued to move the ball with more
rhythm and patience, while the defence stayed locked in.

The Panthers tried to respond with a few deep end zone attempts, but the Vipers
safeties shut down the aerial shots and forced them to look elsewhere. When the
Panthers shifted to the ground game, the Vipers were ready—closing gaps quickly and
limiting yards after contact, squeezing the run game down until it had nowhere to go.

Back on offence, Cara Phillips dropped a 20-yard dime to Rachel McDaid, who was wide open and
unmarked near halfway. Rachel turned upfield and broke for the end zone with
defenders in pursuit, but an unfortunate fumble ended the play short of the finish. The
response was immediate and composed. From around 10 yards out, Phillips pitched a
short pass to Amy Gorham, who showed her sprinter speed and made a direct line to the end
zone—turning a missed opportunity into points.

The defence delivered another shutout stop, and the Vipers offence closed the game
the right way. On the final scoring drive, Phillips connected with Rachel again for the
touchdown and the extra point. This time, the Vipers managed the closing

Key Performers

Cara Phllips was named Offensive MVP for the game.

Tia Sadlon was named Defensive MVP for the game.

Closing & Next Fixture

This was a big one—not just because of the 26-0 scoreline, but because it marked the
Women’s team’s first true “close-out” performance: start fast, stay disciplined, and
finish the game on your terms. Leaving UCD with a 1-1 record, the Vipers now carry real
momentum into the next round of Claddagh Bowl fixtures. The focus is on building
consistency, sharpening execution, and bringing the same intensity into Week 2 triple
header at home on the 25th April.

Opening Overview

Under clear skies at UCD in Dublin, the Northwest Vipers Womens Flag team opened
their Claddagh Bowl campaign on 18 April with a hard-fought game 1 matchup against
the Red Bows. The group arrived ready to get the season underway and, despite a slow
start on offence, showed real character to battle back from an early deficit and briefly
take the lead late in the game. In the end, a late Red Bows drive swung the result,
handing the Vipers a narrow 20-19 defeat and a frustrating finish, but one that offered
plenty of positives and clear lessons to carry into game 2.

First Half Summary

In the opening exchanges Rachel McDaid set the tone with an early interception, turning the
ball over and giving the Vipers an immediate chance to strike first. The offence,
however, took time to settle and couldn’t convert the early opportunity, allowing the
Red Bows to regroup and put the first score on the board.

As the half progressed, the Vipers began to find their footing. Cara Phillips connected with Amy Gorham
for the teams opening touchdown, and Rachel McDaid added the one-point conversion to bring
the Vipers right back into the contest. The scoreline tightened, but the overall feel of
the half was one of steady growththe defence keeping the game within reach while
the offence worked through timing and rhythm.

Second Half Summary

After the break, the Vipers offence started to click. Amy Gorham sparked multiple drives with
explosive runs, and the short passing game helped the squad move the chains. That
momentum carried the Vipers deep into the red zone, where Cara Phillips went over the top
and found Rachel McDaid for a toe-tapping end zone catcha big-time play that lifted the
sideline and injected the energy the Vipers needed.

With belief building, the defence responded by slowing the Red Bows and forcing stops
that created another late opportunity. The Vipers made it count. Cara Phillips delivered a
second deep, cross-field strike to Rachel McDaid in the end zone, pushing the Vipers ahead
19-13 with only minutes remaining and putting the team in position to close out a
statement Week 1 win.

The Red Bows werent finished. Under heavy blitz pressure, a late Vipers pass was
tipped and intercepted, giving the Red Bows a final chance. The Vipers defence fought
to hold the line, but the Red Bows managed to punch in the tying score and convert the
one-point attempt to edge the game 20-19.

Key Performers

Amy Gorham was named Offensive MVP for this game.

Rachel McDaid was name Defenisve MVP for this game.

Closing & Next Fixture

Game 1 didn’t deliver the result the Vipers wanted, but the response after a rocky start
showed the teams growth and resilience. The focus now is on tightening execution,
starting faster, and closing out games when the opportunity is there. Next up, the
Vipers reset and turn their attention to Game 2 of the Claddagh Bowl against the South
Dublin Panthers White team.

Opening Overview

The Northwest Vipers returned to Prehen Playing Fields for their second home game of the season following a short turnaround from their impressive road win in Wexford. Facing the #3 ranked West Dublin Rhinos, with the Vipers sitting at #2, this highly anticipated clash lived up to expectations.

In what proved to be a physical and hard-fought contest, both defences dominated for large periods of the game. The Vipers showed resilience and composure late on, producing a dramatic fourth-quarter comeback to secure an 8–7 victory and move to 3–1 on the season.

First Half Summary

The game opened as a defensive battle, with both teams applying pressure and limiting offensive opportunities. Quarterback Mike Naulty moved the ball effectively through short completions to multiple receiving options, but the Rhinos defence held firm to keep the Vipers scoreless.

The Vipers defence matched that intensity throughout the half. Josh Reed, Darren Quinn, and Niall Lyons were central to the effort, delivering key tackles and forcing multiple three-and-outs to keep the Rhinos offence under control.

Late in the second quarter, the Rhinos found a breakthrough, finishing a drive with a rushing touchdown before converting the extra point to take a 7–0 lead into halftime.

Second Half Summary

The defensive intensity continued into the second half, with both sides struggling to find consistent offensive rhythm.

The Vipers began to build momentum late in the fourth quarter as Mike Naulty connected with Lorcan McCartney, Jack Colhoun, and Lewis Lecky to move into scoring range.

With under two minutes remaining, the Vipers produced a moment of brilliance. On an outside run, Darren Quinn appeared to be stopped before lateralling the ball to Josh Reed, who powered into the endzone to bring the score to 7–6.

Head Coach Paul O’Donnell opted to go for the win on a 2pt Conversion, and Mike Naulty delivered, forcing his way over the line on a quarterback sneak behind a powerful push from the offensive line to give the Vipers an 8–7 lead.

The Rhinos responded with a final drive, moving into field goal range. However, on the last play of the game, JP McKee produced a crucial block to deny the attempt and seal the victory for the Vipers.

Key Performers

This was a true team performance, built on resilience and physicality across all units.

On offence, Mike Naulty (#17, Quarterback) was named Offensive MVP, managing the game effectively and delivering in the defining moment with the winning two-point conversion.

Defensively, Niall Lyons (#55, Defensive Line) earned Defensive MVP honours, producing a dominant display that included multiple tackles for loss and showing the impact of a true veteran presence throughout the game.

On special teams, JP McKee (#51, Linebacker) was named Special Teams MVP, with his game-winning field goal block proving decisive.

MVP awards for the 2026 season are proudly supported by The Branch Bar and Grill, Campbell’s Bar, The Old Dock’s and Georges Bar.

Closing & Next Fixture

The Vipers now turn their focus to their next challenge as they travel to Armoy to face the Causeway Giants on May 17th, marking their first meeting of the season. With momentum building, the Vipers will be aiming to continue their strong run of form.

Opening Overview

Game 3 of Week 2 brought the Northwest Vipers Women’s Flag team back onto the
field at The Vale Centre for the final matchup of a demanding triple-header day. After a
big first home win against the Belfast Knights and a frustrating loss to the North Down
Dragons, the Vipers entered the hour break sitting 1-1 on home turf and looking to
finish the day with a strong response against the Belfast Trojans.

In hot, sunny conditions, the Trojans started fast and punished early mistakes, building
a lead that forced the Vipers into chase mode for most of the game. To their credit, the
Vipers kept competing, found ways to get points on the board, and showed real
resilience under pressure — but the early damage proved difficult to overcome as the
Trojans closed out a 31-13 win.

First Half Summary

The Vipers’ opening possessions were disrupted immediately by a Trojans defensive
score. An early interception was returned for a pick-six, giving the visitors a 6-0 lead
straight off the bat. The Vipers couldn’t turn their next offensive drive into points, and
the Trojans capitalised again to extend the lead to 12-0.

Soon after, the Trojans struck with another short-yardage pick-six, stretching the score
to 18-0 and putting the Vipers in a tough position early. In a game like this, the
challenge becomes as much mental as physical — and the Vipers had to find
composure quickly after two defensive touchdowns.

Second Half Summary

To their credit, the Vipers responded with fight. The offence finally found a foothold as
Cara connected with Tia for a passing touchdown, giving the home side something to
build on. The defence also produced key moments, with both Tia and Rachel McDaid
coming away with interceptions to disrupt Trojans drives and keep the Vipers in the
contest.

The Trojans, however, continued to convert on their possessions, adding scores as the
game wore on and pushing the margin out to 24-6 and then 31-6. Even late in the day
— with fatigue setting in after three games in the heat — the Vipers kept pushing for
positives. Cara added a rushing touchdown on a well-timed trick play, breaking free for
12–15 yard run, and Rachel McDaid secured the extra point to bring the final score to
31-13.

Key Performers

Rachel McDaid was named overall MVP for the Gameday. Tia Sadlon was named Offensive MVP. Amy Gorham was named Defensive MVP.

Closing & Next Fixture

This was a hard one, especially after such a long day at The Vale, but it also delivered
clear lessons: start sharper, protect the ball, and keep building composure when
momentum swings. The Vipers leave Week 2 with plenty to take into training and a
clear focus for Week 3.

Next up, the Vipers travel to Donaghadee for Week 3 fixtures against the Dublin Wolves
and the Louth Mavericks, looking to turn the lessons of Week 2 into a more complete
performance and climb the Claddagh Bowl table.

Opening Overview

Fresh off a landmark first home win at The Vale Centre, the Northwest Vipers Women’s
Flag team returned to the field for Game 2 of their Week 2 triple-header weekend, this
time facing the North Down Dragons. With the momentum of the Belfast Knights win
still in the legs, the Vipers were hoping to carry that energy into the second matchup.
Instead, the Dragons started fast and forced the Vipers into a difficult chase from the
opening minutes. Despite a late offensive spark and another strong defensive shift from
key leaders, the Vipers couldn’t fully recover from early turnovers, falling 19-7.

First Half Summary

The opening exchanges were slow for the Vipers, and the Dragons took advantage
early, jumping out to a 7-0 lead. The Vipers offence struggled to settle, and an early
interception handed the Dragons another short-field opportunity. The defence battled
to limit damage, but the Dragons were able to convert again for a second score. The
extra point didn’t convert, leaving the score at 13-0.

While the Vipers worked to find rhythm, the defensive effort kept the game within
reach. Amy Gorham set the tone with aggressive blitz pressure and consistent flag
pulls, helping shut down the Dragons’ running game and forcing them to earn yards the
hard way.

Second Half Summary

The second half began with another tough moment for the Vipers, as an interception on
the opening possession gave the Dragons yet another chance to extend their lead. The
Vipers defence dug in and held firm, but the offence couldn’t immediately turn the stop
into points.

Rachel produced a key defensive highlight with an interception that briefly swung
momentum and gave the Vipers a chance to get back into the contest. Unfortunately,
the opportunity was short-lived, with the Dragons responding with another interception
to regain control.

In the latter stages, the Vipers finally found some traction. Cara led a drive that ended
with a passing touchdown to rookie wide receiver Aisling Grieve — a positive moment in
a challenging game and another sign of the young talent coming through. The Vipers
added the conversion on a completion to Tia Sadlon, trimming the deficit to 19-7, but
time and field position were against them and the Dragons saw out the remaining
minutes.

Key Performers

Rachel McDaid was named overall MVP for the Gameday. Tia Sadlon was named Offensive MVP. Amy Gorham was named Defensive MVP.

Closing & Next Fixture

This one will sting, but it’s also a clear learning point: against good teams, protecting
the ball and starting fast matters. The Vipers will take the positives — defensive effort,
rookie contributions, and a late offensive breakthrough — and reset quickly. Next up,
the Vipers close out their triple-header weekend with a final matchup against the
Belfast Trojans, looking to respond with sharper execution and the same fight shown
across the day at The Vale Centre.

Opening Overview

A bright, sunny day on the banks of the River Foyle set the scene for a landmark
moment in Northwest Vipers history, as the Women’s Flag team hosted their first ever
fixture at The Vale Centre. With the pitch freshly cut and the home crowd getting
behind the team from the first snap, this wasn’t just another Claddagh Bowl game — it
was a chance to set a standard for what Vipers football at home should look like. The
result matched the occasion: a gritty 13-12 win over the Belfast Knights, sealed by a
late defensive stand and a clutch pass breakup on the final extra-point attempt.

First Half Summary

The game started at a high tempo, and it was the Knights who struck first, taking an
early 6-0 lead. The Vipers responded well, settling quickly and answering with a passing
touchdown from Cara Phillips to Rachel McDaid to level the score at 6-6, though the
extra point attempt didn’t convert.

From there, the Vipers began to build momentum on both sides of the ball. The offense
found a better rhythm and, just before halftime, Phillips connected with McDaid again —
this time finding her at the back of the end zone for the second score of the day. Under
heavy blitz pressure on the conversion, Phillips got the ball up and out on a high pass
that was reeled in by Tia Sadlon for the extra point, giving the Vipers a 13-6 lead going
into the break.

Second Half Summary

The second half became a test of discipline and game management. With a one-score
lead, the focus shifted to staying composed, protecting field position, and making the
Knights work for every yard. The Vipers defence dug in, holding firm through sustained
pressure and keeping the Knights’ offence from finding easy scores.

Late in the game, the Knights managed to pull within one score, bringing the game to
13-12 and setting up a decisive extra-point attempt that would have tied it. In the
biggest moment of the day, the Vipers defence delivered. Rachel McDaid came up with
a crucial pass breakup on the conversion attempt, shutting the door and securing a
historic first home win at The Vale.

Key Performers

Rachel McDaid was named overall MVP for the Gameday. Tia Sadlon was named Offensive MVP. Amy Gorham was named Defensive MVP.

Closing & Next Fixture

This was a milestone day for the Northwest Vipers Women’s team: first time hosting at
The Vale Centre, and the first home win to go with it. It wasn’t perfect, but it was
resilient — and it showed the group can protect a lead and finish games under
pressure. With momentum building in Week 2, the Vipers now turn their attention to the
next Claddagh Bowl matchup, looking to carry the same energy and composure into
Game 2 against the North Down Dragons as the season continues.

Opening Overview

After a narrow defeat to the Dublin City Wolves in Game 1, the Northwest Vipers Women’s Flag team had to reset quickly and step straight back onto the field for Game 2 against the Louth Mavericks. With only a short break in between, this matchup became a real test of resilience, focus, and stamina. The Vipers started sharp and set the tone early, but the game developed into a physical, defensive battle where every drive mattered. In the end, the Mavericks edged it 19–13, leaving the Vipers with two close losses on the day — and plenty of lessons to take forward into Week 4.

First Half Summary

The Vipers opened with a quick-firing drive led by Cara Phillips, moving the offense down the field with purpose and finishing with a passing touchdown to Rachel McDaid. Tia Sadlon secured the extra point conversion to make it 7–0 and give the Vipers the start they were looking for.

The Mavericks responded well, settling into their own rhythm and answering with a touchdown and conversion to level the game at 7–7. From there, both defences began to take control, with neither side giving up easy yards as the half closed out tied.

Second Half Summary

The second half turned into a grind, with both teams trading stops and forcing each other to earn every possession. The Vipers defence delivered two key holds, and the Mavericks matched them with strong stands of their own, keeping the game tight and tense. Midway through the half, the Vipers broke through with a big play. Off a gadget look, Aisling Grieve’s handoff set Cara Phillips free, and she took it 35 yards for a rushing touchdown to put the Vipers back in front at 13–7. The conversion didn’t land, which kept the margin tight.

The Mavericks answered again to tie the game at 13–13, and the closing minutes became a battle of field position and execution. The Vipers fought their way downfield on a long drive, using every down available to get within three yards of the end zone, but couldn’t punch it in. The Mavericks then capitalised, driving back the other way to take a 19–13 lead.

With time running down, the Vipers had one final chance to tie it. The offence moved the ball back into scoring range with well-executed passes, but inside the five-yard line the Vipers couldn’t find the finishing play, and a blocked pass to Aisling Grieve ended the last push.

Key Performers

Cara Phillips was named Offensive MVP for the game while Roxsana Mazdai was named Defensive MVP.

Closing & Next Fixture

Week 3 was a tough day — two close games, two narrow losses — but the Vipers showed grit, discipline, and a willingness to fight right to the final whistle. The focus now is on finishing drives, converting red zone opportunities, and turning strong defensive stretches into points.

Next up, the Vipers head into Week 4 in Belfast, facing the South Dublin Panthers Navy team and UCD, looking to turn the lessons from Donaghadee into results

Opening Overview

Week 3 of the Claddagh Bowl brought the Northwest Vipers Women’s Flag team to Donaghadee for a sunny day of football hosted by the North Down Dragons. Game 1 saw the Vipers matched up against a Dublin City Wolves side that started fast and put early pressure on the scoreboard. The Vipers, though, showed real composure to settle into the game, find their rhythm offensively, and keep fighting right to the final minutes. A late touchdown and two-point conversion made it a one-score finish, but the comeback ultimately came up just short in an 18–15 defeat.

First Half Summary

The Wolves struck first to take a 6-0 lead, and the Vipers’ opening offensive drive was a hard-fought march downfield that unfortunately didn’t end in points. The Wolves capitalised with a second score soon after, and although the conversion didn’t land, it pushed the advantage out to 12-0.

The Vipers responded well on the next possession, settling into a better rhythm and moving the ball with more confidence. The drive ended with a passing touchdown connection to Rachel McDaid, and rookie wide receiver Aisling Grieve added the extra point reception to cut the gap. That score was a big lift heading into halftime, with the Vipers trailing 12-7 but very much in the contest.

Second Half Summary

The second half opened with the Wolves adding another touchdown to extend the lead to 18-7, forcing the Vipers into chase mode. The Vipers defence answered with a strong spell of football, flying to flags and making the Wolves work for every yard. Rachel McDaid led the way with two interceptions, giving the Vipers multiple chances to swing momentum back their way — but the offense couldn’t quite turn those takeaways into points.

Still, the Vipers kept pushing. In the closing minutes, Cara Phillips led a determined drive downfield and into the red zone. The offence finished it with a touchdown pass to Aisling Grieve, and the Vipers stayed aggressive with a two-point conversion completed to Tia Sadlon. That late surge brought the score to 18-15 and set up a tense finish, but time ran out before the Vipers could complete the comeback.

Key Performers

Aisling Greive was named Offensive MVP while Rachel McDaid was named Defensive MVP.

Closing & Next Fixture

It’s a tough one to take because the Vipers showed they could match the Wolves when they settled, and the late fight nearly flipped the result. The positives are clear: better rhythm as the game went on, defensive takeaways, and a composed finish under pressure. The focus now is on starting faster and turning those defensive stops into points as the Vipers move into Game 2 of Week 3.
