Opening Overview

The Northwest Vipers Youth Kitted team opened their 2026 campaign in Game 1 of 2 at the opening Youth Blitz of the season, taking on the Craigavon Cowboys at the Sport Ireland Campus, Blanchardstown. While the scoreboard favoured the Cowboys, the occasion marked an important milestone for the club, with many players pulling on the pads and experiencing competitive American football for the very first time. Facing an experienced Craigavon side, the new-look Vipers squad showed resilience, determination and plenty of encouraging signs as they began their journey together.

First Half Summary

The Craigavon Cowboys made a fast start, finding the end zone early before adding a second score to establish control of the contest. Despite the early setback, the Vipers' defence refused to back down and continued to battle throughout the opening half, producing a number of impressive plays to keep themselves in the game.

Leading the way was Noah Campbell, who enjoyed an outstanding defensive performance with two interceptions, repeatedly halting promising Cowboys drives and giving his side opportunities to swing the momentum. Defensive end Dominic Donaghy-Rees also made his presence felt, creating pressure off the edge with a series of powerful plays that disrupted the Cowboys' backfield and showcased the physicality of the Vipers' defensive front. Although the Vipers trailed heading into halftime, the effort and commitment shown by a squad featuring so many first-time players was a major positive.

Second Half Summary

The Vipers came out with renewed energy after the break and began to find their rhythm offensively. Quarterback Peter Danowski showcased his athleticism, keeping the ball himself and powering into the end zone for the Vipers' first touchdown of the game.

Peter Danowski then made his presence felt on the defensive side of the ball. Lining up at linebacker, he stripped the football from a Cowboys ball carrier before recovering it himself and returning it all the way for a superb defensive touchdown, capping an excellent all-round performance.

Noah Campbell continued to impress with the ball in his hands, producing strong runs at running back while also contributing at wide receiver. Eoin Danowski, brother of Peter, proved to be a reliable target in the passing game, making several assured catches as the Vipers finished the contest on a positive note despite the 26–12 result.

Peter Danowski led by example on both sides of the football, rushing for a touchdown at quarterback before producing one of the standout moments of the game with a strip-and-score touchdown from his linebacker position. Noah Campbell was exceptional throughout, recording two interceptions on defence while also making an impact as both a running back and wide receiver. Dominic Donaghy-Rees consistently applied pressure off the edge, disrupting the Cowboys' offence with a number of big defensive plays, while Eoin Danowski impressed with a series of confident receptions. The entire defensive unit deserves recognition for an energetic and disciplined performance against a strong Craigavon Cowboys side.

Although the opening game ended in defeat, there were plenty of positives for the Northwest Vipers to build upon. With many players making their competitive American football debut, every snap provided valuable experience for this exciting young squad.
