Vipers Pushed All the Way After Strong Start Against Mavericks

Opening Overview

The Northwest Vipers closed out Blitz Two with a hard-fought 22–13 defeat against the Louth Mavericks at the Sport Ireland Campus, Blanchardstown. The young Vipers produced an excellent opening half, taking a 13–0 advantage into the break before the Mavericks mounted a second-half comeback. Despite the result, there were plenty of positives from another competitive performance, with the Vipers offence showing its potential both through the air and on the ground.

First Half Summary

The Vipers made an impressive start to the contest and quickly established themselves offensively. Peter Danowski, lining up at running back, broke free for a long run as Northwest found success moving the football on the ground.

Quarterback Rueben Short also impressed with a number of strong runs, using his legs to extend plays and help move the offence downfield. Short contributed on the other side of the football as well, coming away with an interception as the Vipers defence kept the Mavericks scoreless throughout the opening half.

One of the highlights came through the Danowski brothers. Peter Danowski found Eoin Danowski through the air, with Eoin making the catch before leaping into the end zone for a Vipers touchdown. Peter Danowski then converted the one-point attempt as Northwest headed into halftime with an impressive 13–0 advantage.

Second Half Summary

The Mavericks responded strongly after the break and began to turn the momentum of the contest. Louth found the end zone and continued to apply pressure as they worked their way back into a game the Vipers had controlled throughout the opening half.

The young Vipers continued to battle, with Rueben Short providing a threat with his legs at quarterback and Peter Danowski continuing to make yards from the backfield. However, the Mavericks were able to complete their second-half comeback and eventually moved ahead.

Despite fighting until the final whistle, Northwest couldn't find the additional score needed to regain the lead, with the Mavericks taking a competitive contest 22–13.

Key Performers

Peter Danowski made a major impact from running back, breaking off a long run while also connecting with his brother Eoin Danowski for a touchdown and converting the resulting one-point attempt. Eoin Danowski produced one of the plays of the game with his touchdown reception, finishing the play by leaping into the end zone.

Rueben Short impressed at quarterback with some excellent running throughout the contest, while also making his mark defensively with an interception. His performance on both sides of the football was another encouraging sign for a Vipers squad continuing to develop throughout its first season together.

Despite seeing a 13-point halftime advantage overturned, the performance showed another step forward for this young Northwest Vipers team. Holding a strong Mavericks side scoreless in the opening half and producing big plays offensively demonstrated what this developing group is capable of. With two more games of valuable experience gained at Blitz Two, the Vipers will return to training looking to build on the positives and continue their progression through the 2026 season.
